I’ve been on the hunt for a new milk. I’ve been drinking Soy Milk my whole life and I’m kind of over it.
I popped over to Whole Foods and picked up these three organic unsweetened milk substitutes: 365 Almond Milk, Manitoba Harvest Hemp Bliss, and Turtle Mountain Coconut Milk.
Here the low down:
Almond Milk: 40 cals/ 3g fat/ 0g saturated fat/ 180 mg sodium/ 2g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 1g protein.
- It smells delicious, nutty and yummy. It has almost no natural sweetest and tastes the way almonds do after chewing them a little bit. The consistency is a bit thicker than soy milk, which I like.
Hemp Milk: 60 cals/ 7g fat/ .5g saturated fat/ 50mg sodium/ 1g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 2g protein.
- Bleh! sooo not sweet, very earthy and smells like dirt and plants. It leaves a residue in the bak of my throat. It’s less creamy than almond milk and has the least amount of vitamins.
Coconut Milk: 45 cals/ 5g fat/ 4g saturated fat/ 65g sodium/ 2g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 0g protein.
- Has no smell really but tastes super sweet. Almost too sweet to be considered as a stand in for Soy milk. It’s creamy probably perfect for coffee and has the most vitamins.
My pick: The Unsweetened Almond Milk. It has the most mild taste, lowest calories, fat and 0 saturated fat, it’s creamy-ish and subtley nutty. It also had Vitamin A, C, D, E, Iron, and Calcium. It lacks the potency of B12 that Coconut Milk has but for the cal decrease I can certainly take a B-Complex vitamin.
