The joy of life comes from our encounters

“…make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future.

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.”

A huge sandstorm in Beijing caused the sky in Seoul to look like this pretty much all day today.  I got up at 10:30 thinking it was still night time because the sky was so dark.  I just thought it was another foggy- polluted day in Seoul, so Nadine and I met to for lunch and coffee.  I came home to two face masks in my mail box and then heard the news of the Yellow Dust warning.  I read that it’s pretty common here in the Spring, caused by China’s industrialization and deforestation, but this Yellow dust storm is supposed to be the worst of the year.
I guess I shouldn’t have taken that walk around the neighborhood.

Weird indeed!  But it’s nice to hear that he was talking to his wife :)

Turns out cabs are the same everywhere.  Even in Seoul they all talk on the phone while driving.  But to who?

I always wondered the same thing.  And then the wondering stopped one night in Seoul (which is a ridiculous coincidence) when I was out of my mind and I asked our broken-English-speaking cab driver who he was talking to.  He was very nice about it and said, “It’s my wife.”  Then I remember saying something along the lines of, “That’s awesome that you can talk to any one woman for that long.  I’d shoot someone.”  And that was the abrupt end to any conversation with the cab driver.

Korea is the only country where you can reserve a flight and it “holds your spot” with out even paying.  It’s crazy.

Hilarious!  Jared and I went to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D there as well, too bad we had didn’t have time for the game room :/

myradventures:

Last weekend, we had about an hour to kill before watching Alice in Wonderland, so we decided to stop by the Lotte Department Store Arcade and found quite possibly the best arcade game ever.

You basically throw plastic balls at this screen in order to complete the game’s objective. The first two photos are of a game in which you have to throw the plastic balls and passengers on a train who are walking around. If you throw enough at the man in the trench coat, he unbuttons the coat and flashes you, though censored. This game’s amazing because it accurately depicts Koreans snoozing on the train.

In the second game, you have to smack the mosquitoes to prevent them from stinging the sleeping baby.

Ridiculously amazing.

Koreans brush their teeth at work and leave their toothbrushes out.  Even when I’m getting a manicure I can look right next to the nail polish and see a cup full of all the girls tooth brushes.  I tried to get behind this, after all I used to be a dental assistant, but I just couldn’t.  I stick to brushing and flossing twice a day in the privacy of my own home

This St.Patrick’s Day I did not spend the day drinking Guinness, green beer and overeating, I spent it eating Black Noodles* and comforting my Korean co-teacher.  Per South Korean tradition when you are single you celebrate Black Day on April 14th.  You eat jajangmyeon (black noodles) and drink with your friends.  I guess the same goes for when there is a break up.  Elle had her heart broken so we went to sob a little and eat black noodles to comfort her.
*Jajangmyeon is not really black noodles, as you can tell, it’s white noodles covered in a yummy black bean sauce.  The sauce usually is mixed with with onions, pork, and zucchini.  We added mussels and shrimp to ours to liven it up a little ;)
